How To Take Action
1. No Excuses - Do It Now!
Once you have decided to take action, do it now. Waiting only builds up the tension and anxiety which makes taking action more testing. OK, there may be obstacles and blocks in the way, but get started and keep going. Taking action is very empowering.
2. Be Powerful, Be Responsible
Blaming your circumstances or other people saps your energy; doing something about it puts the power and the responsibility back in your hands. When you realise that you are responsible for your own success (and your own failure), you will feel powerful.
3. Fear As A Friend
If you treat your fear as a friend, prodding you to do something and to take responsibility for it, then fear is no longer your enemy.
4. Focus on How - Not On What If
Putting your focus on how to do something, how to solve a problem, how to achieve a goal will clear your mind. Concentrating on what might go wrong will confuse it. While it is reasonable to anticipate and plan for some events, over-anticipation or excess anxiety can drain all the pleasure from an experience. When setting out on a 300 mile car journey, it is sensible to know that if you have a puncture, you will call the roadside assistance services, or, that if there is an accident on the motorway which delays you for several hours, you have a sandwich and a book and can listen to the radio; this is planning. What if I have a seizure? What if my brakes fail? What if a lorry comes round the corner on the wrong side of the road? These ‘What ifs’ are negative and neurotic. Focusing on the how puts your mind to good use and fosters a positive inner attitude.
5. Ask For Help
There is nothing shameful in asking others to help you. Whether it is learning to shop online or moving house, there will be people only too happy to help. Leave the feelings of embarrassment and shame behind. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness and does not mean you are a failure - think of the people who have asked you for help, were they losers? No! Did you gain from helping someone else? Yes! You cannot read other people’s minds and they cannot read yours, so instead of thinking “I wish Quentin would ask me where I am going to stay on my way to visit”, reframe your thinking to “I’ll tell Quentin that I am going to be driving 300 miles and ask for his help to book an hotel room”. Be clear and positive about what you want help with; while people are happy to help, they need to know exactly what is expected of them and they don’t respond so well to whiners. And, of course, be grateful!
